As an educator and architect, Robert A.M. Stern has been a central figure in American architecture for more than 50 years. He was a curator at the Architectural League of New York before opening his own firm in 1977.

While he forged a career in postmodernism in his earlier years, today his 200-person firm is considered the leading source of classical architecture, especially when it comes to residential projects (its luxury New York City buildings feature 20th-century traditionalism on the outside and 21st-century comfort and technology within). One of Stern’s most important legacies is his work in education: He was the dean of the Yale School of Architecture for decades, and his numerous books on architecture are essential to the study of the discipline.
