Much has been written in the UK tabloids about Ed Sheeran’s Suffolk, England, estate. The “Perfect” singer’s neighbors allegedly objected when he added a pond to his 16-acre property and again when he erected a large sign outside of his barn turned private pub. In addition to these features, Sheeranville is said to be home to a treehouse, multiple dwellings, and a chapel complete with—wait for it—a crypt.
In the latest GQ Hype cover story, writer Lauren Larson broached the subject of the fascinatingly macabre amenity with the four-time Grammy winner. Sheeran not only confirmed that it does exist, but spoke very earnestly about the subject of death. (“I had approached the subject of the crypt cheekily, as I would any celebrity eccentricity, and Sheeran’s explanation withers me,” Larson writes.)
“I wouldn’t say it’s a crypt,” Sheeran says. “It’s a hole that’s dug in the ground with a bit of stone over it, so whenever the day comes and I pass away, I get to go in there. People think it’s really weird and really morbid, but I’ve had friends die without wills, and no one knows what to do.”
The chapel that contains the grave was not merely built to be Sheeran’s final resting place. The “Shape of You” singer told the publication that he uses it as a place to mourn loved ones who have died and that it is also a place of celebration, as he has hosted weddings there for friends.
Sheeran and his wife, Cherry Seaborn, both grew up not far from the estate, though they didn’t become romantically involved until later in life. They share two daughters, three-year-old Lyra and one-year-old Jupiter, and Sheeran’s hope, he sweetly shared with GQ Hype, is that they will be able to remember him at the chapel after he’s gone.
